migrating from substack to mataroa

Hey, it's Caroline! I've migrated from Substack to Mataroa for my blogging platform, so I've put my preexisting Substack posts (all two of them) onto here. If you're getting this post as an email, you were subscribed to my Substack and I migrated my subscriber list over, so you're now subscribed to this.

Why I'm moving away from Substack

There are many reasons to do this. The TL:DR; is I don't feel like supporting Substack. I believe in an Internet that isn't owned solely by a handful of corporations who we all pay digital rent to.

For a more thorough explanation, check out this post by Manuel Moreale.

Why Mataroa

Jiaqi migrated from Substack to Mataroa, which is how I learned about it. After some research into the various blogging platforms, I've concluded this seems to be the best one for me. It drives me a little crazy I can't change the font—which is really the one piece of customization I care about because I Love Good Type—but I understand and respect the philosophical reasons Mataroa's creators have for limiting the customization options.

I did consider coding a website from scratch (as I did with my current professional website). While I enjoy that, it's a lot of work to build in email newsletter capabilities that I didn't feel like doing. I love my professional website for writing about design and tech (and experimenting with code), but I would like something more low-maintenance for a personal/hobby space.

I'm happy to talk to anyone about the various Content (TM) platforms out there and, if they're interested, building their own website. I'm delighted by the different ways people add diversity to the Internet ecosystem.
